Hammonds Campground

Overview

Set 12 km inland from Aireys Inlet, Hammonds Campground is a small, bookable bush camp tucked into dry forest. It’s simple, quiet, and feels properly wild—think evening kangaroos and busy birdlife—with the coast and waterfall country an easy drive away.

Campsites & Layout

There are 16 unpowered sites for up to six people each. Sites 1–4 are drive‑in and suit camper trailers or small caravans; sites 5–16 are walk‑in tent sites with parking nearby. Facilities are basic: non‑flush toilets, shared fireplaces, and low tables/seats. Bring your own drinking water and firewood, and take all rubbish out.

Essentials & Rules

Bookings and fees are required year‑round. Dogs aren’t permitted. Fires are only in the provided fireplaces and only when conditions allow—always check current Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Ban status. Access is via unsealed roads, so take it steady. Before you roll, check Parks Victoria’s change‑of‑conditions page; updates can happen at short notice.

What You’ll See

Expect kangaroos at dusk and a chorus of native birds throughout the day; occasional koalas turn up in the eastern Otways. The broader park also shelters echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots—watch for their little diggings on tracks, especially around dawn and dusk.

Nearby Walks & Things To Do

Distillery Creek’s nature trails are close, and the waterfalls and forest walks around Lorne and the eastern Otways make great day trips from camp. Hiking and bike rides are the main draw; the beach towns on the Great Ocean Road are within easy reach for a salty change of scene.

Best Time To Visit

Weeknights are your friend for quieter camping. Weekends and school holidays book out quickly. Wildlife watching is best around first light and dusk. In summer, fire restrictions are common—plan for no‑fire nights and pack a stove.
