Overview
This roadside lookout gives you a teaser of one of the Otways’ most photogenic waterfalls without committing to the full stair workout. It’s a short stroll (about 10 m) from the lower car park to a viewing platform, but note it only shows the top of the falls. If you want the money shot, keep going down to the base.
Lookout vs. Base
- Lookout: Quick and easy, but expect a partial, tree‑framed view of the upper drop.
- Base view: Roughly 400 m each way with about 200 stairs and ~55 m elevation change, finishing on a flat boardwalk beside the creek. The plunge‑pool viewpoint is where the falls really impress. Adventurous visitors sometimes rock‑hop another ~40 m for a closer spray zone—muddy and slippery when wet.
Getting There & Parking
The final kilometres are on a narrow, winding gravel road. There are two small car parks: a tiny lower lot near the lookout (~6 spaces) and a larger upper car park 400 m up the road (about 20–30 spaces). The last ~400 m to the lower car park isn’t advised for campers. Both lots fill quickly on weekends and holidays.
Best Time to Visit
Go early or late for softer light and fewer people. The falls look fantastic year‑round and really roar after heavy rain. If you’re timing a photo run, plan to arrive before the midday rush; midweek is quieter.
Wildlife & After‑Dark
You’re in classic cool‑temperate rainforest—watch for echidna and long‑nosed bandicoot diggings that can make the track uneven, especially at dawn and dusk. Snakes are present in warmer months. After dark, a small glow‑worm colony can sometimes be seen near the “platypus” sign along rock crevices—let your eyes adjust and avoid shining lights directly at them.
Rules & Safety
No dogs, no fires, no camping, no bikes or horses. Expect steep, uneven and slippery surfaces, falling limbs, unstable cliffs, and slick rocks near the water—grippy footwear helps. There are no facilities at the lookout or falls; bring what you need and pack it out. Check Parks Victoria for any change‑of‑conditions updates before you go.
