Beauchamp Falls Walk

Overview

A classic Otways rainforest ramble to a 20‑metre cascade, this return walk threads through towering Mountain Ash, myrtle beech and blackwood with lush fern gullies for company. It’s short but not trivial: expect a steady descent to the falls and a solid climb back. Total distance is about 3 km/1.9 miles return with roughly 308 ft of elevation gain.

On the Track

From the picnic area near the campground, follow the signed path into cool temperate rainforest. The trail mixes firm dirt with short boardwalks and stair sections, and you’ll hear Deppler Creek long before you see it. Near the end, steps lead to a dedicated viewing platform that frames the falls perfectly. Some visitors rock‑hop closer or wade in the small pool, but the rocks and track can be very slippery when wet—take it slowly and protect ankles with sturdy footwear.

Effort and Timing

Most walkers take 1–1.3 hours for the return trip, plus photo time. The climb out is the workout, especially after rain when mud and slick sections add effort. Trekking poles help on the ascent.

Access and Facilities

Start at the Beauchamp Falls picnic area/campground off Aire Valley Road near Beech Forest. The final access is unsealed but generally fine for 2WD. You’ll find picnic tables and toilets at the trailhead. Dogs aren’t permitted on the walk.

Best Times to Hike

October–April offers the driest underfoot conditions and easier footing. If you don’t mind mud, winter and early spring (June–September) often deliver the strongest waterfall flow. This spot can get busy; go early or late for quieter forest sounds and softer, side‑lit photos.

If you’re chasing more water, pair this with Hopetoun Falls; Triplet Falls and Little Aire Falls are also close by. Forrest is the handy nearby town for food and supplies.
