Johanna Beach

Johanna Beach is a long, open, west-facing beach near the small settlement of Johanna, on the coast inside Great Otway National Park. Its exposed breaks draw experienced surfers; onshore, you get a broad sand-and-surf walk with green hills behind the water. The surf is part of the draw and the main limitation: visitors repeatedly report strong rips and rough water, so this isn’t a casual swimming beach.

For a useful photo, take the marked beach path and frame the lines of white surf against the green hills. The west-facing shore can catch warm late light, though cloud and wind change the scene.

Red Johanna Road leads to the beach access by the adjacent Johanna Beach Campground. Its map marks a walking track to shore, and visitors describe the walk from the car park as short. Johanna is also a stop on the Great Ocean Walk, the long coastal route generally walked east to west from Apollo Bay toward the Twelve Apostles.

The campground has 25 numbered sites, toilets, and water labeled non-potable. Don’t rely on that water for drinking. Campfires are prohibited there, and campers are asked to take their rubbish away. Those are campground facilities and rules, not services on the sand.

At low tide, visitors often explore the rock shelves and pools along the shore. They add texture to the view and give you something to look for beyond the surf, but this isn’t a sheltered cove; keep the changing water in mind as you walk.

Around the Johanna River and Stafford Creek, overlapping dune ridges formed in at least two periods. Moving sand redirected streams and closed an earlier western outlet from Johanna Beach; later breaches cut deeply into the lower valleys. A few closed-basin blowouts are still developing on the dune crests, an uncommon feature in Victoria.

The name Johanna is tied to a vessel wrecked at the mouth of the Johanna River on 22 September 1843. Accounts differ on whether the vessel was called Joanna or Johanna and whether it was a schooner or a brig, so the wreck is clearer than the ship’s exact description. The beach later became a major surf stage too: it hosted the World Surfing Championships in 1970.

From July to September, humpback and southern right whales may pass offshore. It’s a good time to scan the horizon, but sightings are never guaranteed.
