Overview
Sabine Falls is a three-tier waterfall complex dropping roughly 120–130 metres down an escarpment near Mount Sabine in the Otway Ranges. A roughly 3.6 km return walk leads from the picnic area to a small lookout across a steep, densely vegetated valley. Go for the rainforest walk and the long view; if you want to stand at a waterfall’s base, this isn’t the stop for that.

Guide
The path winds through cool-temperate rainforest and tree ferns, crosses two creeks, then drops into gullies before climbing back to the lookout. Expect uneven ground, steps and fallen timber, with a strenuous climb on the return. Allow around two hours, and longer if you take your time or the footing is slow.
The three cascades are usually described as roughly 120 to 130 metres tall, though accounts differ on the total. The little platform sits several hundred metres away, and foliage can partly hide the upper fall. Binoculars help. For a photo, keep the forested escarpment around the white water; a very tight crop loses the sense of how far the falls drop.
The falls tend to run stronger after wet weather, but the track gets muddy and slippery too. Pick a drier spell if firm footing matters more; go after rain if fuller water is worth a slower, muddier walk.
About halfway along, rock cuttings are associated with an old mill site and its water channel. The mill is gone, but the cuts are a small reminder of the valley’s working past amid the ferns and creeks.
The walk starts at Sabine Falls Picnic Area on Sunnyside Road. There’s parking and a few picnic tables at the trailhead, so plan this as a bring-your-own-food stop; there’s no food service at the falls.
