Erskine Falls

Overview

Erskine Falls is a signature 30‑metre cascade set in lush, cool‑temperate rainforest near Lorne. You get two perspectives: a short stroll to the upper platform, or a more dramatic view from the base after descending about 230 steps through ferny gullies.

What You’ll See

Expect mossy rock slabs, tall eucalypts and constant spray when the river is running well. The lower platform puts you right beside the plume; the upper lookout frames the falls through the canopy for wider photos.

Getting There

It’s roughly a 15‑minute drive inland from Lorne via Erskine Falls Road. There’s parking at the start of the walk.

Walk Options

• Upper lookout: a brief, easy walk from the car park.
• Lower lookout: descend ~230 steps; it’s steep with some loose gravel. Benches along the way make the climb back more manageable.
• Want more? Continue on the 7.5 km Erskine River Walk downstream to Lorne (expect rock hopping and river crossings), or approach via the easier 4.4 km Lemonade Creek Walk from Blanket Leaf Picnic Area.

Facilities

There are no toilets or water at the falls. Use the facilities at nearby Blanket Leaf Picnic Area (about 2 km away), and bring your own drinking water.

Best Time to Visit

The waterfall looks its best after rain; winter–spring usually brings the strongest flow, but it runs year‑round. It’s popular—especially weekends and holidays—so aim for early morning or late afternoon for space and softer light. Most visits take up to an hour.

Safety & Etiquette

Rocks and stairs can be wet and mossy—wear shoes with good grip and stay on formed tracks and platforms. Swimming at the base isn’t recommended. Pack out all rubbish and give wildlife plenty of space.

Wildlife

Short‑beaked echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots live in this forest; you’ll often spot their diggings beside the track. Dawn and dusk are when they’re most active—watch your footing and admire from a distance.

Current Advisories (late 2025)

Track statuses change with weather and maintenance. Recent notices include closures to the Kalimna Tramline link and Upper Kalimna Falls, and the Cora Lynn Cascades track; Big Hill Campground has weekday closures until December 12, 2025, and Lake Elizabeth Campground is scheduled to close January 27–March 31, 2026 for upgrades.
