Cape Otway Lightstation

Cape Otway Lightstation is a ticketed heritage precinct on an exposed headland, reached by Lighthouse Road off the Great Ocean Road. The 1848 lighthouse is the landmark, but the stop also brings together keepers’ buildings, communications history, a wartime radar bunker, coastal walks and ocean views. It’s a strong choice if you like maritime history; leave enough time to look around rather than making this a quick tower photo. The forest-road detour is part of the visit, so allow for it in your drive.

The lightstation stands above the meeting of Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean. The open water and cliff-edged headland explain why this was such an important signal station. For a photo, frame the white tower with the ocean behind it; that gives the building some sense of its isolated position.

The lighthouse was built from sandstone quarried at Parker River, about 5 km east. Ox teams hauled the blocks to the cape, where 70 men worked for ten months. The stones were cut so precisely they needed no cement. The tower rises 21 m, and its lantern sits about 91 m above sea level.

When the light first shone in 1848, 21 reflectors in three groups burned sperm-whale oil. The station later moved through a revolving lens and colza oil, a kerosene mantle, then electric lighting and mains power. The historic light was decommissioned in January 1994; a solar-powered beacon took over.

The 1859 telegraph station and the World War II radar bunker add two more chapters to the precinct. They show how the cape’s strategic role outlasted the original lamp: first as a landmark for ships, then as a communications and surveillance point. Cape Otway is on Gadubanud Country, part of Eastern Maar Country.

The on-site Lightkeepers Café makes a break here easier. Scones with jam and cream, plus tea or coffee, are a repeatedly praised choice. The operator also offers stays in Lightkeeper’s Cottage, Lighthouse Lodge and Lightstation Studio, so you can overnight at the headland rather than return to town.
