The Canyon (Erskine River)

Overview

Tucked inland from Lorne, The Canyon is a tight, ferny gorge choked with giant moss‑covered boulders. It’s the most memorable stretch of the Lorne Waterfalls Circuit—cool, shaded, and a total contrast to the open eucalypt forest around town. Expect a touch of adventure as you weave, step and scramble among the rocks.

What You’ll See

• A narrow gully of green: dripping moss, tree ferns and house‑sized boulders create a rainforest microclimate.
• Water features close by: the circuit also links Won Wondah Falls, Henderson Falls (a short signed detour) and Phantom Falls, which can be reduced to a trickle at times but sits in a dramatic amphitheatre.
• Regular birdlife: listen for kookaburras and look for flashes of colour from lorikeets and rosellas.

Route & Access

• Typical start: Sheoak Picnic Area off Allenvale Road. Many walkers tackle an ~8–8.5 km circuit in 2.5–3 hours, passing Henderson Falls, The Canyon and Phantom Falls before looping back.
• You can also approach from Henderson Track near Lorne; note the tiny parking area here fills quickly.

Difficulty & Safety

• Generally easy to moderate, but The Canyon itself has uneven footing, short steep pinches and some hands‑on sections.
• Surfaces are slippery near waterfalls and after rain; take your time on wet rock.
• Usual Otways cautions apply: watch for snakes, be mindful of falling limbs, and avoid creek sections after heavy rain due to flash‑flood potential.

Current Notes (area)

• Several nearby tracks have partial closures (e.g., Cora Lynn Cascades track; the Kalimna Tramline link and Upper Kalimna Falls). Check the latest advisories before stitching longer routes together.
• No toilets on the circuit itself; use facilities at Sheoak Picnic Area or Blanket Leaf Picnic Ground. Dogs, bikes, vehicles, camping and horses aren’t permitted on the Erskine River Walk sections.

Best Time to Visit

• After recent rain, when the forest is at its lushest and waterfalls look their best—just budget extra time for mud and slick rock.
• To dodge crowds and snag a park, start early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially on weekends and holidays.
• Photographers: the gorge’s shade is forgiving all day; soft light after rain makes the greens pop.
