A short, rewarding forest walk to Lower Kalimna Falls with the rare treat of stepping behind the curtain of water. The track follows an old timber tramway through a cool creek valley of tall eucalypts and tree ferns. It’s an easy outing that still feels wild and mossy.
Start at the Sheoak Picnic Area and follow signs for the Kalimna Falls Walking Track. Stay on the main signed path (ignore Tramline link options). It’s about 3.5 miles/5.6 km total, out‑and‑back to Lower Kalimna Falls. Expect gentle grades and a well‑defined tread with occasional uneven patches. At the falls, an undercut ledge lets you walk behind the spray.
Generally easy, with some slippery or muddy sections after rain. Most hikers take 1.5–2 hours return, depending on pace and photo stops.
Shaded fern gullies, creek crossings on firm tread, and a classic Otways waterfall amphitheatre. Birdwatching is good along the valley. Keep an eye out for digging signs from echidnas and long‑nosed bandicoots near the track.
As of late November 2025, Upper Kalimna Falls and the Kalimna Tramline link walk are closed due to damaged infrastructure; Lower Kalimna Falls remains open via the main track from Sheoak Picnic Area. Common hazards include slippery surfaces, uneven ground, falling limbs, and snakes. Mobile reception is poor. No dogs, no bikes, no horses, no fires, and no drones without a permit. Stay on formed tracks.
Best after recent rain when the falls are flowing—just expect more mud. Go early or late in the day for easier parking and softer light in the fern gullies. Wear sturdy shoes with grip; pack a light rain layer, water, snacks, and a small torch if you might finish near dusk.
Park at Sheoak Picnic Area (near Lorne). Spaces are limited—arrive early or late—and follow signs for the Kalimna Falls Walking Track.
Poor mobile reception; slippery mud and rocks after rain; falling limbs; snakes; and current closures to Upper Kalimna Falls and the Kalimna Tramline link due to a damaged pedestrian bridge.
