Won Wondah Falls

Overview

Won Wondah is a shy, 8‑metre cascade on Henderson Creek—more about the rainforest mood than big-water drama. It’s an easy add-on if you’re already poking around the Lorne end of the Otways, and a natural warm‑up for nearby Henderson Falls.

Getting There

Start from Sheoak Picnic Area (near Lorne). The final approach includes unsealed road, generally fine for a 2WD in average conditions. Trailhead facilities include toilets, picnic tables and shelter.

The Walk

It’s roughly 1 km one‑way through dense, shaded forest to a purpose‑built viewing platform above the ravine. The track is well‑signed but can be muddy after rain, with some steps and roots underfoot. Typical visits take about 30–45 minutes return.

What You’ll See

Expect a slender drop framed by tree ferns and mossy gullies. The platform outlook is pleasant, but foliage often screens the falls, so photography can be tricky. Treat this stop as a rainforest experience first, waterfall second.

Pair It With Henderson Falls

From Won Wondah, continue about 800 m to Henderson Falls. You can access the base there, and most visitors find it the more photogenic payoff.

Longer Option

If you’re keen, the Lorne Waterfalls Circuit (“The Canyon”) links Won Wondah, Henderson Falls, The Canyon and Phantom Falls in a ~8.5 km, ~3‑hour loop. It’s well‑signed, but bring a map and enough time.

Best Time to Visit

Winter to early spring (June–September) gives the most reliable flow; in summer the falls can shrink to a trickle. After rain is ideal. The Sheoak carpark can fill on sunny weekends and holidays, so arrive early if you can.

Wildlife and Fungi

Birdlife is lively along these tracks—keep an ear out for Rainbow Lorikeets, Crimson Rosellas and Kookaburras. The broader park is also renowned for fungi; after wet weather you may spot colorful species on damp logs, and the ghost fungus is famous for its green bioluminescence.

Know Before You Go

There’s no official access to the base—enjoy the view from the platform. No dogs and no entry fee. Tracks may close after storms; check current conditions with Parks Victoria.
