Overview

This is a gentle 0.8‑mile/1.3‑km loop from Sheoak Picnic Area in Great Otway National Park. Expect about 20 m of total elevation and 30–60 minutes on a formed dirt track with short rises, footbridges, and a small suspension bridge over Sheoak Creek. It’s a low‑commitment stroll that makes a great first taste of the Otways’ wet forest.

What You’ll See

Ferny gullies under tall Manna Gums and stands of tree ferns set the mood, with interpretive signs to help you (and the kids) decode what you’re walking through. Wildlife is a real draw: keep an eye out for koalas and swamp wallabies, listen for Crescent Honeyeaters, and you may notice V‑shaped sap scars from Yellow‑bellied Gliders on some trunks. After dark, glow‑worms are sometimes seen near the creek and bridge—but plan daylight if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

Trail Conditions and Difficulty

The track is easy but uneven in places and can be muddy and slick after rain. There are a few steps and narrow sections, plus the suspension bridge and a small wooden bridge. It’s not wheelchair accessible; prams/strollers may struggle.

Best Time to Hike

Go after rain for the forest at its lushest (take grippy footwear). Spring mornings balance cooler temps and lighter crowds. Night visits are generally not advised due to unsealed access roads and lack of lighting; if you’re finishing near dusk, carry a torch and keep lights dim near the creek to avoid disturbing wildlife.

Rules and Safety

Dogs aren’t permitted on this walk. Assistance dogs are allowed if trained, identifiable, and under control. No fires and no camping at the picnic area. Stay on designated tracks to protect vegetation and avoid trip hazards from wildlife diggings. Snakes may be active in warmer months.

Nearby Alternatives from the Same Trailhead

If you want more, Henderson Falls (3 km return, ~1 hr) is the easiest step‑up, with a quick detour to Won Wondah Falls. For a bigger day, Lower Kalimna Falls (8.4 km return, ~4 hrs) follows a historic timber tramway. Phantom Falls (8.6 km return, ~3 hrs) includes The Canyon. You can also head toward the coast via Sheoak Falls (3.6 km one way) or climb to Castle Rock (5 km return, ~3 hrs) for coastal views.

Current Track Notes (November 27, 2025)

The Nature Walk is open. Upper Kalimna Falls and the Kalimna Tramline link walk are closed; Lower Kalimna Falls remains accessible from Sheoak Picnic Area. The Cora Lynn Cascades track is closed, which affects some longer through‑walks. Always check for changed conditions before you go.
