Cliff Top (Mount Le Conte)

Overview

Cliff Tops sits on the Mount Le Conte massif around 6,555 feet, one of the summit area’s four classic viewpoints alongside High Top, West Point, and Myrtle Point. It’s the go-to perch for a Smokies sunset—broad, sweeping, and wonderfully earned after the climb.

Getting There

You’ll hike to the Le Conte summit area first, then follow a short, signed spur to Cliff Tops near LeConte Lodge. Popular approaches include the steep and scenic Alum Cave Trail (about 4.9–5 miles one way), Trillium Gap (longer but gentler, with Grotto Falls and occasional llama pack trains), Rainbow Falls (strenuous, following Le Conte Creek), Bullhead (quieter and less traveled), and the Boulevard from Newfound Gap (a high, airy ridge walk). Expect significant elevation gain and mountain weather on all routes.

What You’ll See

From the cliffy ledges, you get big western panoramas and that warm, late-day glow that makes this spot famous. The summit zone is cloaked in cool, high-elevation spruce–fir forest—very different from Gatlinburg’s climate down below. If the weather cooperates, sunsets here steal the show; if not, clouds can swallow the view in minutes.

Conditions & Safety

Mount Le Conte is cooler, wetter, and windier than the valleys, and winter commonly brings snow and ice. Some approach trails have narrow sections with cables and lots of stairs; traction devices are smart in icy conditions. Stay well back from the cliff edges, especially when the rocks are wet or rime-coated.

Amenities & Logistics

There’s no restroom at Cliff Tops itself. The nearest facilities are at LeConte Lodge in season. There’s no road to the summit—everyone hikes in—so plan food, layers, and time accordingly. Popular trailheads (like Alum Cave on Newfound Gap Road) fill early; a park parking tag is required for stays over 15 minutes.

Best Time to Visit

For photography and long views, spring and fall or early mornings tend to be clearest; summer afternoons can run hazy and cloud-prone. Cliff Tops truly shines at sunset, but build in time and bring a light if you’re not overnighting at the lodge. Start early on busy routes to secure parking and breathing room on the climb.
