Schoolhouse Gap Trail Parking

Overview

This is the small, dedicated parking area for the Schoolhouse Gap Trail on Laurel Creek Road, a few miles past the Townsend Y toward Cades Cove. It’s the most convenient place to start if you’re here for spring wildflowers, a mellow woods walk, or to connect with Turkeypen Ridge and Chestnut Top.

Parking and access

The lot sits directly at the signed trailhead, so you can be on the path in minutes. Expect it to be tight: reports consistently note it fills fast during peak periods, especially in April wildflower season and on holiday weekends. There are no restrooms here—plan a pit stop at a picnic area or visitor center beforehand. A valid park parking tag is required for your vehicle.

Why park here

From this spot you step onto a broad, former roadbed that’s easygoing and family-friendly, with creek access in the lower mile and excellent wildflower displays in spring and early summer. It’s also the jumping-off point for popular connections and the unmarked spur to White Oak Sinks (a meadow with a small waterfall and the closed-to-entry Blowhole Cave). Seasonal closures can affect that spur—follow current guidance and posted signs.

Best time to visit

Arrive early morning if you’re coming on spring weekends or holidays; this is when the lot fills quickest. Shoulder seasons and winter can be pleasantly quiet. If you’re targeting wildflowers, early to mid-spring is prime.

• GPS can be unreliable in the Smokies; download official park road and trail maps for offline use before you go.
• The Schoolhouse Gap Trail is shared with horses—yield, step to the downhill side, and give riders plenty of space.
• Bears are occasionally active in this corridor; closures have occurred in the past. Check park alerts, give wildlife a wide berth, and store food properly.
• Cave entry in the White Oak Sinks area is not permitted, and that spur may see seasonal restrictions to protect bats.
