Five Points Vista

Overview

Five Points Vista is a drive-to overlook along the Guadalupe Rim in the Lincoln National Forest, just outside the park boundary. It’s a classic big-sky viewpoint over the park’s north side—line-of-sight to Dog Canyon—with sweeping looks at the Rim and multiple high points that define the range.

Getting There

From Carlsbad, head west on NM-137 toward Queen, then turn left onto Forest Road 540 (Guadalupe Rim Road) and continue roughly 3 miles to roadside pullouts near the vista. Highways are paved, but the forest road is graded gravel and signage can be sparse—carry a paper road-use/MVUM map or offline navigation. There’s no fee to drive Lincoln National Forest roads; park entry fees apply only when you enter park areas.

What You'll See

Expect wide, elevated sightlines over Dog Canyon and the Guadalupe Mountains, including signature summits like Guadalupe Peak and El Capitan from various angles along the rim road. On clear days, the views feel endless.

Road and Conditions

FR 540 is graded gravel with potential washboard and rocks—drive slowly and don’t attempt in poor conditions. High clearance is helpful after storms. Cell service is hit-or-miss. There are informal turnouts near the vista but no formal lot, and no water, restrooms, or trash service—pack out everything.

Best Time to Visit

It’s a year-round option, but summer heat and winter storms (including occasional snow/ice) can affect comfort and road conditions—check weather and current advisories before you go. Plan 1–4 hours including the drive and photo stops.

Good to Know

Pets are fine at roadside pullouts on the forest road (follow standard rules). If you want an easier drive-up viewpoint without gravel, consider the quick highway pullouts for El Capitan or Guadalupe Peak views along US 62/180.
