Indian Meadow Nature Trail

Indian Meadow Nature Trail is an easy loop around the open meadow at Dog Canyon. Starting beside the group campsite, the full walk is about 0.8 miles, including the short shared access path walked in both directions. A 0.6-mile figure is also used for the meadow circuit on its own. Allow 30 to 45 minutes at an unhurried pace. The trail crosses an arroyo, then stays almost level, making this a simple way to see the north district without taking on a climb.

The path circles a meadow beneath the surrounding ridge. Dog Canyon's habitats range from arid grassland to juniper-oak woodland, pine forest and streamside maples and oaks. That variety supports wildlife, though no species list is specific to this short route. The canyon's name refers to black-tailed prairie dogs, which were once abundant here.

The trail starts across Dog Canyon Road from the ranger station beside the group campsite. At the adjacent campground, drinking water and year-round flush toilets are available; there is no camp store, so bring food. No reservation is required, and the park's normal entrance fee applies. Pets are not allowed on park trails; individually trained service animals are permitted.
