Plan your stop

Before you go

Choose an approach and plan access

From ʻĀinapō Trailhead, the hike is 10.2 miles one way: 2.7 miles to lower ʻĀinapō Cabin, then another 7.5 to the summit cabin. A second approach starts at the trailhead past Mauna Loa Observatory, on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway side; it is about 5.9 miles from the Observatory to the cabin. The ʻĀinapō route requires Kapāpala Ranch gate access and high-clearance 4WD for a rough, eight-mile road with limited parking. You need a backcountry permit for the summit cabin; the lower state-run ʻĀinapō Cabin requires its own permit if you stay there. Confirm route and road access before setting out.

Mauna Loa Summit Cabin is a remote backcountry hut at 13,250 feet, with 12 bunks and a cooking area. It sits high on Mauna Loa, one of the world's largest active volcanoes. This is an overnight expedition for fit, experienced hikers, not a drive-up stop.

What is at the cabinThe 12 bunks have mattress pads.

The 12 bunks have mattress pads. There is a toilet and an attached rain-catchment tank, but the water is untreated and levels vary; treat it and check the tank before your hike. Bring your own food and supplies. The cabin has a cooking area, not meal service.

Lava, altitude and the 2022 eruptionThe approach crosses rough, jagged lava, and cairns can be hard to follow when visibility drops.

The approach crosses rough, jagged lava, and cairns can be hard to follow when visibility drops. At 13,250 feet, altitude sickness is common; nights fall below freezing year-round, and severe weather can bring snow, driving rain, high winds or whiteouts. In November 2022, Mauna Loa's eruption covered about four miles of trail in eight places, with lava from a few feet to almost 70 feet thick.
