Overview
Cedar Falls Overlook is the rim viewpoint above one of the park’s most photogenic waterfalls. The falls drop roughly 50 feet over Blackhand sandstone, in a cool, hemlock-shaded gorge shaped by ancient erosion and glacial-era processes. Despite the name, those “cedars” are actually native Eastern hemlocks.
Getting There
From the Cedar Falls area, follow signs for the Gorge Overlook Trail to reach the elevated vantage. The rim segment is generally level and straightforward. If you add the short Cedar Falls loop, expect many steps; some sections are marked one-way—just follow the signage.
What You’ll See
From the overlook you get a full, top-down perspective of the waterfall and its rock amphitheater. Flow is strongest in spring and after heavy rain; during dry spells (late summer into early fall) the falls can shrink to a trickle. The surrounding forest hosts hemlocks and typical eastern hardwood wildlife—songbirds are common, and deer are often seen near dusk along the broader rim corridor toward Rose Lake.
Facilities
There are no amenities at the overlook. Use the Cedar Falls parking area above the gorge, which has parking, restrooms, and picnic tables. Drinking water isn’t listed—bring your own. Facilities can change with maintenance, so check park alerts before you go.
Rules & Safety
Trails and steps can be muddy and slick after rain. Wear good traction, and trekking poles help on the stairs. Stay on marked trails and supervise kids near drop-offs. No wading or swimming in creeks or waterfalls.
Best Time to Visit
Hours run from about a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. For lighter crowds and easier parking, go early morning or late afternoon. Spring and post-rain days deliver the best water and drama; fall adds glowing foliage and soft light.
