West Mountain Summit Overlook caps the scenic Summit Loop on West Mountain, a two‑way drive reached from Prospect Avenue or Whittington Avenue. It’s a quick, rewarding stop: roll up, step out, and you’re looking south across the Ouachitas toward the Trap Mountains with Lake Hamilton glinting in the distance.
What You’ll See
The summit viewpoint faces south, so you get big‑sky vistas rather than a downtown panorama. If you want that classic look over Bathhouse Row and the Hot Springs Mountain Tower, plan a second stop at the West Mountain Lower Overlook on your way up or down. Near the summit you’ll also spot an outcrop of Arkansas novaculite—an exceptionally hard silica rock that Indigenous Caddo people used for tools and that later became famous as a whetstone.
Getting There
Follow West Mountain Scenic Drive (two‑way the whole route) to the Summit Loop and watch for the signed pullouts. Spaces at the overlooks are limited, so arrive early if you can and be patient with two‑way traffic. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed.
Trails From the Top
If you’d like to stretch your legs, the summit area connects to several short routes. West Mountain Trail (about 1.2 miles one way) gently wanders the ridge and can be linked with Mountain Top Trail for a longer loop. From downtown, the Canyon Trail climbs steeply to meet the West Mountain trails. Another option is the West Mountain via Sunset Trail route (about 1.8 miles out‑and‑back), generally moderate with a straightforward climb.
Nearby Picnic Stop
The West Mountain Picnic Overlook (below the summit) has picnic tables and a 1924 stone shelter—one of the park’s oldest structures still in use—making it a good place to linger after your summit views.
Best Time to Visit
The road and overlooks are generally open daily from early morning to evening (about 6 am to 10 pm). For photography and calmer pullouts, target sunrise to mid‑morning or late afternoon into golden hour. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends. If you’re chasing city views, pair your summit stop with the Lower Overlook earlier or later in the day when the light is soft.
