A quick, high-reward stop on West Mountain Scenic Drive, the Lower Overlook serves up a wide, “aerial” view of downtown Hot Springs and Bathhouse Row, with the Hot Springs Mountain Tower rising across the valley. Many visitors consider this the best city view on the drive thanks to fewer trees blocking the sightlines.

Getting There

Enter West Mountain Scenic Drive from Prospect Avenue or Whittington Avenue. It’s a two‑way road that climbs to a summit loop with three overlooks; the Lower Overlook is the first pullout you’ll hit with that classic downtown view.

What You’ll See

Expect a straight-on panorama of the historic bathhouses, the former Army–Navy Hospital below, and the Mountain Tower on the opposite ridge. It’s a natural spot for quick photos or a quiet breather with a cityscape backdrop.

Golden hours shine here. Early morning and late afternoon give soft light and long shadows across the rooftops. Some visitors report that in winter the gate may open after sunrise—if you’re chasing dawn, you may need to park at the gate and walk up with a headlamp. Dusk brings pastel skies and city lights. Midweek mornings make parking easier.

Nearby and Trail Options

Continue the loop to the West Mountain Picnic Overlook (historic 1924 shelter and picnic tables) and the Summit Overlook for south‑facing vistas and a novaculite outcrop. From the summit area you can hop onto the West Mountain Trail loop or connect to the Sunset Trail for longer rambles.

Good to Know

There are no restrooms at the overlooks, so plan your stops before you drive up. The pullout is paved but limited in size. Traffic is two‑way with some grades—take it slow, especially around curves. Dawn and dusk wildlife sightings happen; one visitor even encountered coyotes on an early walk—stay aware.
