Overview

The West Beach Overlook tops out on the Dune Succession Trail, a short loop that packs a punch: a stout stair climb, a wooden viewing platform, and wide-open looks over Lake Michigan and the rolling dune landscape. On clear days you may spot distant city skylines, but the real star is the sweeping sand-and-water panorama.

Getting There & The Trail

Start from the main West Beach parking lot and follow the Dune Succession Trail loop (about a mile). Expect a stair-heavy ascent—around 270 steps—to reach the overlook platform before the trail loops back down toward the beach.

Facilities Nearby

West Beach is one of the park’s best-equipped areas: a large paved lot (with space for cars and buses), year-round restrooms and potable water at the main lot, seasonal showers/lockers at the bathhouse, picnic shelters (reservable), and a guarded swimming beach in summer. Seasonal snacks and a small gift/concession presence are noted here as well.

Ecology, History & Wildlife

This loop is a living field guide to dune ecology, with interpretive signs that walk you through the classic stages of dune succession. As you look down from the platform, interdunal ponds host birds and amphibians; oak/pine woodlands on the loop support a variety of songbirds and small mammals. Bring binoculars if you like to linger on the details.

Best Time to Visit

Hit it early or on weekdays in summer to dodge the rush—West Beach is popular and the lot can fill. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler for the stairs. For photography, aim for sunrise or late-day light when the dunes glow and lake color pops. Clear, low-haze days offer your best shot at skyline views.

Need-to-Know

Stay on the marked boardwalks and stairs to protect fragile dunes. Expect limited shade on the climb; bring water and sun protection. West Beach is a fee area, separate from other parts of the park, and lifeguards are seasonal.
