Tolleston Dunes Trail

Tolleston Dunes Trail is a 2.9-mile lollipop loop from the Main Lot through former sand-mining ground, rolling dunes, oak savanna, and wetland. Allow about two hours for 127 feet of total climb. The ground rises and falls in short pitches; patches of sand make it feel more like a moderate walk than a flat nature path. Keep right on the recommended outer circuit after the boardwalk. The left cutoff makes a shorter 2.1-mile walk. An entrance pass is required, and there is no restroom or potable water at the main lot.

The main lot sits on a former sand-mining site, and the first third of a mile crosses that relatively flat ground. Then the trail enters the rolling old dunes. Expect a mix of packed soil, gravel, sand, and boardwalk. Footing is generally good, though the dunes bring repeated short rises and dips. The modest total climb helps, but this still takes more attention than a level nature path.

At the first loop junction, follow the signed route to the right. The boardwalk comes near the one-mile point; soon after, stay right at the cutoff for the full outer loop. The left branch trims 0.8 mile and makes a 2.1-mile outing. Near mile two, keep right at the next cutoff, then right again at the final junction to return to the parking lot. The 2.9 miles includes the shared approach from the lot and back; it is the full walk, not just the curved part of the loop. The boardwalk can be submerged, so check current trail status before you go.

The Tolleston system is the youngest of Indiana Dunes’ three dune systems, formed about 4,700 years ago when Lake Michigan stood roughly 25 feet higher than today. These ridges preserve a shoreline left behind as the lake changed. The trail’s short climbs follow those rolling dunes rather than aiming at a single summit.

The route crosses a globally rare black oak savanna: widely spaced, fire-resistant oaks over prairie grasses and flowers, between eastern hardwood forest and tallgrass prairie. Historically, lightning and fires set by Indigenous people helped keep the understory open; fire suppression let it thicken. Look for eastern prickly pear, butterfly weed, and wild blue lupine, which grows here in abundance. Stay on the signed path to protect fragile habitat.

The main trail is not wheelchair accessible. A separate accessible boardwalk and wetland overlook sit about a quarter-mile west along U.S. 12, with two shaded picnic tables. It is a useful short stop for the marsh view, but it is not part of this loop or the main trailhead. Pets are allowed on the trail on a leash no longer than six feet.
