Long Lake Trail (West Beach)

Overview

This mellow, scenery-packed loop samples the best of the West Beach side of the dunes in a compact package. Clocking in at about 2.2 miles total, the Long Lake Trail loops through pinelands, open sand, wetland edges, and the shoreline of Long Lake. Expect a mix of packed dirt, loose sand, and short boardwalks. It’s an easy-to-moderate outing overall, with the effort mostly coming from sandy sections.

Why hike it

If you want a nature-forward walk away from the beach crowds, this is the West Beach loop to pick. Birding along Long Lake can be excellent, and in late spring and summer the wildflowers put on a show. A rare jack pine pinery adds a surprising northwoods vibe and welcome shade. The loop feels more secluded than the beach stair circuit, yet you can still link over to the shore if you want to dip your toes in Lake Michigan afterward.

What to expect underfoot

Footing alternates between firm dirt, soft sand, and occasional boardwalk. Sand can sap the legs more than you’d think—plan time and footwear accordingly. The loop itself is mostly flat. If you tack on the adjacent Dune Succession segment, you’ll hit the famous dune staircase (about 270 steps) and big lake views, but that’s optional.

Crowds and vibe

The Long Lake sections tend to be quieter; areas closer to the main beach can feel busy on weekends. The route is family-friendly for most, but sandy stretches and any added stairs can challenge hikers with mobility issues.

Best time to hike

April through October is the sweet spot for pleasant temps, wildflowers, and bird activity. Summer weekends draw the biggest crowds to the beach; go early or late in the day for calmer trails and better wildlife viewing. The trail is open year-round, but sand and any steeper bits can be slick or icy in winter.

Tips

• Wear breathable, closed-toe shoes that handle sand and dirt well.
• Bring water and sun protection—shade comes in pockets, not consistently.
• Stay on marked paths to protect fragile dune habitats.
• If you want big views and a workout, add the Dune Succession loop; if you want quiet nature time, stick to Long Lake.
