Dune Succession Trail

This is the standalone Dune Succession Loop at West Beach: 0.9 mile from the main lot, including the walk to the trail and the return. The dune section itself is described as about 0.6 mile when it is part of the longer West Beach route. It takes in a stair climb, a dune overlook and a circuit through changing sand habitats. Allow about 45–60 minutes; soft sand slows the walk and the view is worth a pause. Choose this short loop if you want the main climb and lake view without adding the separate West Beach and Long Lake loops, which together make a 3.4-mile hike.

From the lot, follow the access road north toward the bathhouse; the trail picks up west of the building. It starts in relative shade, then crosses packed dirt, raised boardwalk and loose sand. The route climbs about 270 stairs to the dune ridge before winding back down. The steps are the hard effort in an otherwise brief walk, and the soft sand makes the mileage feel longer underfoot. The open dune and shore-side sections have little shade; conditions beside the lake can feel different from the woods. Stay on marked paths to protect the fragile dunes and ponds.

At the top of the stairs, Lake Michigan opens below the dune and Chicago is visible across the water when the air is clear. The stairway itself makes a useful foreground for a photograph, with dune grasses around it and the lake beyond. This is the route’s signature pause, not a separate summit; take in the view before following the trail down through sand and boardwalk toward the lot.

The route is an introduction to dune succession: wind and waves pile lake sand into a foredune, then hardy plants establish in the shifting ground and make room for later communities. Marram grass traps and holds sand; eastern cottonwood can take root in sheltered spots. Farther along, jack pine grows in sandy barrens, with wetter panne pockets and woodland nearby. These pine stands are a northern relict in the region, sustained by the lakeshore setting. Open-dune habitat also supports the federally endangered Pitcher’s thistle. The best way to see this close-up landscape is to stay on the built tread rather than cut across plants or wet hollows.

Some visitors know this route as the Diana of the Dunes Dare. The name points to Alice Mabel Gray, who left Chicago in 1915 to live along the Indiana shore. She became a voice for protecting the dunes and died near today’s West Beach in 1925. The short trail ties that human story to the changing landscape around it; it does not follow a separate route to her home.

The flattened ground around the parking area came from 1920s sand mining. Railcars carried sand away for fill and construction before the remaining dunes were protected. Conservationists Dorothy Buell and Charlotte Read helped preserve West Beach, and the mined areas have since filled back in with native vegetation. The contrast is visible from the trail: a large, engineered arrival area at the edge of a landscape still shaped by wind, water and plants.

The paved West Beach lot is the correct starting access, with year-round restrooms and potable water. Seasonal bathhouse facilities add restrooms, water, showers and lockers; covered picnic shelters sit near the lot. A summer car entrance fee applies, so check current entry details before driving in. The trail itself is not wheelchair accessible, although the walkway to the bathhouse and beach is. Leashed pets may use the trail; if you continue to the beach, they cannot stay in the lifeguarded swimming area from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the Monday of Labor Day weekend.
