West Beach is the park’s big, all‑day beach hangout on Lake Michigan—broad sand, rolling dunes, and the most robust amenities in the area. It’s the go‑to spot if you want easy logistics without sacrificing scenery.

Why it’s worth your time

Compared to smaller pullouts, West Beach is built for a full beach day: nearly 600 parking spaces, a large bathhouse, and multiple picnic shelters you can reserve. You also get a legit taste of the dunes on the short but steep Dune Succession Trail, which starts right from the lot and tops out with sweeping views of the lake and the dune ecosystem.

What to expect

• A wide, sandy shoreline with gently sloping entry.
• A short walk from the parking area to the beach and bathhouse.
• Seasonal lifeguards on duty, plus showers and lockers when the bathhouse is open.
• Several covered picnic shelters near the lot for group meetups and shaded lunches.

Trails and views

The Dune Succession Trail is a roughly one‑mile loop with stairs over the dunes and an overlook platform—quick effort, big payoff. Interpretive signs explain how these dunes form and change over time, so this stop doubles as a crash course in local ecology.

Wildlife

This stretch of shore and dunes is a magnet for birds, especially during spring and fall migrations. Bring binoculars—casual beach time can easily turn into accidental birding.
