Tolleston Dunes Overlook

Tolleston Dunes Overlook is a small roadside stop on U.S. 12, separate from the longer Tolleston Dunes Trail to the east. An easy, roughly 0.1-mile boardwalk leads to two shaded overlook areas with picnic tables and interpretive signs above a large wetland. It’s a good short pause if you’re passing on U.S. 12 or want a quiet picnic. The view is close and understated, not a big Lake Michigan panorama.

The Tolleston dune ridge began forming about 4,700 years ago, when Lake Michigan stood roughly 25 feet higher than it does now. It’s the youngest of the park’s three dune systems. The ridges mark how the lake’s shoreline shifted as its level changed.

The surrounding landscape mixes wetland with globally rare black oak savanna. Prickly pear, butterfly weed and wild blue lupine grow in the Tolleston complex; lupine is especially abundant. Stick to the boardwalk and trail: the habitat is fragile, and poison ivy can grow along the edges.

Use the separate paved pull-off for the overlook, about a quarter mile west of the main trail parking lot. The ramp and boardwalk make this a low-effort, accessible stop; allow about 15 minutes. Two picnic tables are first come, first served, and cooking fires aren’t allowed there. There’s no restroom or drinking water at the overlook. Dogs are permitted on leashes no longer than six feet, and ticks are present year-round.
