Overview

West Beach is the Indiana Dunes sampler platter: three short, linked loops that most hikers stitch together into a roughly 3.5‑mile circuit. Expect a little of everything—loose sand, sturdy boardwalks, a long staircase up a dune ridge, quiet woods, and a beach finish on Lake Michigan. Overall difficulty sits in the easy‑to‑moderate range, but the stairs and sandy climbs will raise your heart rate.

Route and Terrain

The network is made up of three loops you can hike individually or as a single circuit:

  • Dune Succession (0.9 miles): the signature section with about 270 stairs up to an overlook. This is the steepest and most popular piece.
  • West Beach Loop (1.2 miles): gentle paths through open dunes and restored beach habitat, with seasonal wildflowers.
  • Long Lake Loop (2.2 miles): a more sheltered feel around forest and wetland edges, with good birding along the lake.

Surfaces change frequently—loose sand, packed dirt, boardwalks, and stairs—so your pace will ebb and flow.

Highlights

From the top of the Dune Succession stairs, you get big‑sky views over Lake Michigan and, on clear days, a glimpse of the Chicago skyline. The trail doubles as a living classroom of Great Lakes ecology: you’ll walk the stages of dune succession from bare sand to shaded forest, then out to wetlands at Long Lake. Finish where you started—steps from the beach—so a post‑hike swim is an easy add.

Best Time to Hike

April through October has the best footing and access to all features. Summer brings the warmest beach days and the most people. Start early or aim for weekdays to dodge peak crowds. Winter hikes are absolutely doable and uniquely beautiful, but expect icy or snow‑covered sand and take extra care on stairs and boardwalks.

Tips and Context

  • Take your time on the 270‑step climb—turn around for evolving lake views.
  • Sun protection and water matter here; much of the route is exposed.
  • Stay on marked paths. Dunes are both fragile and disorienting when you wander.
  • The flat areas by the lots hint at a past life: sand was mined and shipped out by rail in the early 1900s. Conservation wins later protected what you’re walking today. You may also hear about “Diana of the Dunes” (Alice Mabel Gray), a local figure tied to early preservation stories.

Access and Logistics

Park at the large West Beach lot off North County Line Road (near US‑12). Restrooms are by the beach area. No hiking permit is needed, but a parking fee or park pass is typically required. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Pros

  • Chicago skyline views from the dune overlook on clear days
  • Quieter birding stretch along Long Lake mid‑loop

Cons

  • Loose sand slows your pace and tires legs more than the mileage suggests
  • Summer beach crowds and a parking fee at the main lot

Parking

Large West Beach lot off North County Line Rd near US‑12; restrooms at the beach. Parking fee or park pass typically required.

Caution

270 stairs and loose sand can be strenuous; limited shade on dune sections; in winter, sand and boardwalks may be icy. Stay on marked trails to protect fragile dunes.
