Overview
Perched on Greenstone Ridge at the highest point on the island’s east end (just over 1,100 feet), the Mount Ojibway Fire Tower blends history with knockout scenery. It’s a popular scenic stop along the Greenstone Ridge Trail, and while the enclosed tower room is off-limits, you can climb partway up the stairs for a loftier vantage without the vertigo of the full height.
Getting There
Most hikers reach it from Daisy Farm Campground—about 1.7 miles up to the ridge. If you’re arriving by boat, you can dock at the Daisy Farm Dock and make the hike from there; daily boat rentals are available out of Rock Harbor Marina. It’s squarely a backcountry outing: there’s no road access and no trailhead parking anywhere near the tower.
What You’ll See
Expect wide-open views across Isle Royale’s interior lakes and bays, and on clear days, broad sweeps of Lake Superior. A park webcam at the summit looks southeast toward Caribou Island, the Middle Islands, and the entrance to Moskey Basin, which matches what you’ll see in person when visibility is good. In early summer, keep an eye out for wildflowers and the occasional patch of wild strawberries along the approach. Wetlands below the ridge show classic beaver activity.
History in Brief
The original lookout went up in 1939 and the current steel structure replaced it in 1964. It served fire detection duties into the late 20th century and now houses telecommunications gear that keeps park operations running. Its historic role in fire management earned it National Register recognition in 2021.
On-Site Reality
This is a wilderness viewpoint, not a developed overlook. There are no restrooms, no tables, no water, and no signage fanfare. Only the lower portion of the stairs is open, and the tower room remains closed. Water is scarce along this stretch of ridge—plan to treat and carry from Daisy Farm Campground or Chickenbone Lake.
Best Time to Visit
Go when the forecast promises clear skies—views are the whole point here. The ridge can be windy and conditions change quickly, so bring layers. If you’re tying this into a Greenstone Ridge day, build in extra time for the detour and for lingering at the viewpoint.
