Edisen Fishery

Edisen Fishery is a small historic fish camp on the south end of Rock Harbor, its log fish house, net house, main house and dock gathered along the water. It is the park's most intact surviving example of a small family-run commercial fishery, so it is a worthwhile stop if the island's working history matters to you. Reach it by boat; it is often paired with Rock Harbor Lighthouse, a separate stop nearby.

The appeal is seeing a whole fish camp rather than one isolated building: the dock, fish house, net-drying gear and outbuildings show how closely work and home life sat to the harbor. An interpretive center on the site adds context when it is open. A fishery demonstrator is normally listed for July and August, but access to interiors has varied, so treat the shore-side setting as the sure part of the visit and entry as a bonus.

People fished here by around 1890, when Louis Mattson and John Anderson built a residence by the shore; the surviving commercial fishery operated continuously from 1910 to 1975. Pete and Laura Edisen took over the camp in 1938, and Pete became its last fisherman and namesake. As sport-fishing pressure grew in the 1950s, commercial netting was reduced. The Edisens continued as fish-camp demonstrators and supplied fresh fish to Rock Harbor Lodge.

From the water, frame the dock and low fish house together with the larger log building behind it; the pair of buildings and their red trim make this read as a fishery rather than generic shoreline. The wider shoreline view also shows how the camp's buildings cluster around the harbor.
