Rock Harbor Lighthouse

Rock Harbor Lighthouse is a 50-foot, white round-brick tower with a black lantern, joined to its keeper’s house on the rocky shore at Rock Harbor’s southwest entrance. It’s one of Isle Royale’s best-known historic stops. If you’re exploring by boat and enjoy maritime history, make room for it; getting here takes more planning than a roadside stop.

The lighthouse was built and lit in 1855, when copper mining and commercial fishing brought more vessels to Isle Royale. Its Fourth Order Fresnel lens sent a fixed white light across the lake. As mining waned, the light went out in 1859; renewed activity brought it back in 1874. After a newer light was established on Menagerie Island, Rock Harbor’s beacon was permanently extinguished in 1879.

The keeper’s house now serves as a museum, with historical and interpretive displays and a tactile exhibit. After the light was retired, the building sheltered camping parties. Brothers Arnold and Milford Johnson lived there from 1928 to 1939, adding another chapter to the life of a building that began as working navigation infrastructure.
