Cholla Cactus Garden Nature Trail

This is an easy 0.25-mile loop through the Cholla Cactus Garden in Pinto Basin; allow 15 to 30 minutes. The mostly flat dirt path meanders among thousands of teddy-bear cholla, with occasional mild inclines, a short wooden boardwalk and views across the basin to the mountains. It's a close-up nature walk rather than a longer hike, so keep it for a quick, unusual stop; skip it if you're looking for varied terrain or a sustained walk.

Cholla segments break off easily and their sharp spines can catch on shoes, clothes or skin. Stay on the marked trail and wear closed-toed shoes. There’s no shade, so follow the park’s advice to start before 10 a.m. on summer days and bring water. Pets aren't allowed; service animals may accompany their handler on a six-foot leash.

The garden sits in the Pinto Basin transition between the Colorado and Mojave deserts. Detached cholla stems can root where they land, but they're too heavy for wind to carry far, so new plants tend to grow near the parent cactus. That gives the garden its dense, clustered look. The “jumping” nickname describes how readily spiny pieces attach on contact; they don't actually jump.
