Overview

If you want big views without the big crowds, Warren Peak delivers. Tucked in the Black Rock corner of the park, it feels remote yet is easy to reach from the Black Rock Campground area. The summit rewards you with sweeping, 360‑degree vistas that can include Mount San Gorgonio, Mount San Jacinto, the Little San Bernardino Mountains, and broad valleys on clear days.

Route & Difficulty

Plan on about 6.3 miles round trip with roughly 1,100 feet of gain. The hike starts gently in a sandy wash and finishes with a steeper push to the top. Footing gets looser near the summit, so take your time on the descent. Navigation is generally straightforward, but there are intersecting trails and a well‑known naming/labeling quirk near the top—having a map or a downloaded route helps.

What You’ll See

The lower trail meanders through groves of Joshua trees, Mojave yuccas, goldenbush, and desert shrubs. As you climb, the vegetation shifts into pinyon–juniper woodland with expanding views in every direction. Spring adds wildflowers; the summit is all about the panorama.

Atmosphere

This is a less busy slice of the park. Even when Black Rock Campground is active, the trail often feels calmer than the main attractions. It’s a great place to soak up classic desert scenery without the tour‑bus energy.

Getting There & Parking

Start from the Black Rock Backcountry Trailhead or near the Black Rock Nature Center (by campsite 30). Overflow parking is available in the horse camp area when it’s busy. The Black Rock area is isolated from the rest of the park’s road network, so plan your day around being here.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for cooler seasons or early/late in the day. Sunrise and sunset give soft light and long‑shadow drama from the summit. Weekdays are typically quieter; weekends can be busier around the campground. Avoid midday heat, especially in warmer months.
