Hi-View Nature Trail

Hi-View Nature Trail is a 1.3-mile loop from the Hi-View trailhead, climbing a desert ridge before curling back through a canyon. It is a good choice when you want an hour or two of mountain views and a close look at Black Rock’s Joshua trees, pinyon pines, and junipers. Plan on one to two hours. The route gains about 400 feet; deep sand, uneven rock, and built rock steps make this short hike feel like a moderate outing.

The trail begins on a sandy, fairly level track, then steepens as it climbs. Views open east over Black Rock Canyon and north toward Yucca Valley. Benches face the San Bernardino Mountains, with San Gorgonio visible beyond the nearer ridges. A register marks the high point, and a short side path reaches a rocky crest. From the ridge, include the closer ridges below San Gorgonio in a photo to show the view’s depth.

Past the high point, the path drops to a saddle and a bench looking east over Black Rock Campground, then turns into a canyon and returns roughly parallel to the climb. Numbered markers point out plants along the way. Several Black Rock trails meet here, so carry the area map and follow the Hi-View signs through the junctions. Shade is limited and cell service is unreliable. In summer, start before 8 a.m. with plenty of water. Pets are not allowed on park trails; leashed service animals are allowed.
