Gungurul Campground

Overview

If you want Kakadu nights minus the crowds, Gungurul is your move. It’s a small, fee-based bush campground just off the Kakadu Highway—easy for 2WDs—but it feels wonderfully away from it all. Parks highlight it as one of the quietest spots, and it shows in the wildlife activity around camp.

Why come here

• Wildlife is the headline—birdlife in particular. Keen birders sometimes look for the elusive red goshawk in this area.
• From camp, a signed track heads to a lookout over the South Alligator valley. It’s a straightforward outing that rewards you with wide-open views.

The lookout walk

There’s a named Gungurul Lookout Walk that starts right from the campground. Reports note roughly a 4 km return distance; allow unhurried time (heat can slow things down) and bring a camera and binoculars for those big valley vistas.

Facilities & what to expect

• Pit/long-drop toilets; no showers, no power, no dump point.
• Picnic tables and simple unmarked sites suitable for tents, camper trailers and small caravans.
• No drinking water—plan to be fully self-sufficient.
• No generators or alcohol permitted; no rubbish bins, so pack out everything.
• Payment is by fee/envelope honesty box; it’s a paid campground.

Wildlife

Expect active birdlife around camp thanks to the quiet setting. Birders keep an eye out for raptors—red goshawk has been noted in the area—plus the usual Top End chorus at dawn and dusk. Bring binoculars.

Gungurul sits off the Kakadu Highway, about 58 km from Cooinda. Access is via a short sealed spur; suitable for 2WD vehicles. Typical fees have been noted as budget-friendly (e.g., per-adult nightly rates), but always check current park info before you go.

Best time to visit

• Early morning or late afternoon: best for wildlife activity, cooler walking conditions, and softer light at the lookout.
• Weekdays are generally very quiet; even weekends tend to stay low-key compared to bigger campgrounds.
