Gungurul Lookout Walk

This is a short, steady out-and-back from the Gungurul Campground to a rocky lookout with sweeping views over the South Alligator River valley. It’s about 1.1 miles/1.8 km total (return), with a modest uphill on a narrow dirt path and some rocky steps. Plan on 45–60 minutes return, plus time on top.

Expect a well-marked track through open savanna woodland—think eucalypts, native grasses, and occasional rock outcrops—before the final push onto the rocky summit platform. The reward is classic Top End scenery: broad woodlands, sandstone ridges, and the river system laid out below. Sunrise and sunset light up the landscape beautifully and are worth timing your visit for.

Crowds are typically light, which is part of the appeal. It’s not as famous as Kakadu’s marquee lookouts, but that’s the point—you get big views without the big scene. Birdlife can be lively in the cool hours (cockatoos, small finches, and raptors riding thermals), so bring binoculars if that’s your thing.

Start at the Gungurul Campground just off the Kakadu Highway. Facilities are basic (toilets, picnic tables, barbecue), making it an easy stop or a convenient base if you want to camp and hit the lookout for golden-hour views.

Tips: carry plenty of water and sun protection—shade thins out as you climb. The surface can be uneven and slippery after rain, and there are no railings at the top, so keep an eye on kids. In warmer months, mosquitoes can be bothersome near the river.

Best time to hike: the dry season (roughly May–September) for firmer tracks, cooler temps, and clear views. Early morning or late afternoon gives softer light, calmer air, and better birdwatching. In the wet season, sections may be slippery and access can change—check the park’s Access Report before you go.

Bottom line: a peaceful, low-effort lookout that overdelivers on views. If you want a short, rewarding leg-stretcher between bigger Kakadu stops, this is a strong pick.
