Mirray Lookout

Overview

Mirray (often signed Mirrai) Lookout is a quiet hilltop perch above the Kakadu savanna, reached by a short, steep track off the Kakadu Highway between Jabiru and Cooinda. It’s not as famous as the park’s marquee viewpoints, and that’s exactly why it appeals—peace, birdsong, and big-sky country without the crowds.

The Walk

Expect a brief but punchy ascent on a rocky dirt path. Reports range from 30–35 minutes return to around 1.5 hours depending on fitness, heat and stops. There’s a handy bench halfway up and a shaded shelter at the top. Footing is uneven in places, so sturdy shoes help.

What You’ll See

At the summit, a simple elevated platform looks out over endless savanna woodlands with glimpses toward escarpments and seasonal wetlands. Note that some of the view is filtered or partially blocked by trees around the platform—this isn’t a sheer cliff panorama, but the atmosphere and sense of space are lovely, especially in clear dry-season light.

Wildlife

Listen for woodland birds on the climb and at the top—parrots, honeyeaters and other regulars of Kakadu’s trees show up here. You might also spot small mammals among the rocks; it’s a good place to slow down and scan quietly.

Best Time to Visit

• Season: Dry season (late April to early November) offers cooler temps and clearer skies.
• Time of day: Go early or late for softer light and to dodge the worst heat; midday can be punishing.
• Crowds: Generally light any day of the week—expect plenty of solitude.

Know Before You Go

This is a minimalist lookout: no toilets, no water, no shop. Bring ample water, sun protection and decent footwear. The climb is short but steep, and heat stress is a real risk if you start late.

Worth It?

If you like low-key viewpoints with a bit of effort and a lot of quiet, Mirray is a satisfying detour. If you’re chasing the park’s most dramatic, unobstructed vistas, there are bigger-hitting lookouts elsewhere—this one is more about the walk-and-breathe experience than a blockbuster panorama.
