Twin Falls Gorge Boardwalk

This is a roughly 3 km return, Grade 4 gorge walk from Twin Falls Carpark. The visitor route is the base-of-gorge walk, not the separate 6 km Twin Falls Plateau Walk. A seasonal shuttle boat carries visitors into the gorge; after docking, follow the creek upstream over rocks and boulders and along the floating boardwalk to a white-sand beach and plunge-pool setting beneath the 150 m escarpment. It is a short route on the map but a rough, uneven walking experience. The stored line represents the physical corridor once from the carpark and boat access to the waterfall; length is the total return distance.

Reach Twin Falls Carpark by high-clearance 4WD with a snorkel. The approach includes a potentially deep Jim Jim Creek crossing, and the route from Jim Jim Falls is slow and unsealed. Shuttle-boat tickets are sold through Kakadu visitor services, including Bowali Visitor Centre and Karnamarr campground; confirm the current operating arrangements before setting out. The gorge and road are seasonal, with access dependent on Kakadu’s access report and land-manager requirements.

Expect a mix of clear creek water, tropical vegetation and ancient Arnhem Land sandstone shaped by wet-season floods. Aquatic wildlife may include barramundi, saratoga, black bream, rainbow fish, long-necked turtles, Mertens water monitors and freshwater crocodiles; the pig-nosed turtle is an occasional possibility. Listen for the white-lined honeyeater, which has cultural significance in the gorge.
