Hiking Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Rock Art Walk
The routeThis easy 1.
This easy 1.5 km circuit starts at the Nourlangie (Burrungkuy) car park and visits the Anbangbang Shelter, Anbangbang Gallery and Kunwarddewardde Lookout. Allow up to 2 hours to explore the rock art, shelters and escarpment views rather than treating it as a fast walk. The signed loop is the Burrungkuy/Nourlangie art walk; it is not the longer Barrk Sandstone Walk or the separate Anbangbang Billabong and Nawurlandja walks.

Burrungkuy is a World Heritage cultural site with paintings and archaeological evidence spanning many thousands of years. The Anbangbang Gallery includes depictions associated with Namarrkon, the Lightning Man, while the lookout shows the connection between the rock and the surrounding Arnhem Land escarpment. Keep to the marked path and behind barriers, and never touch paintings, drip lines or artefacts.

The main gallery approach and part of the loop are wheelchair accessible, but the lookout and upper art sites are not a fully accessible route. Kakadu park passes are required. Gates are open from 7 am to 7 pm daily; check the park access report before setting out because site access can change seasonally.
