Joffre Gorge Walk

Overview

Joffre Gorge (Jijingunha) is the showpiece amphitheatre beneath Joffre Falls—red, iron‑rich walls curling into a natural bowl with a deep, cold pool at the base. The signature walk is short but serious: about 0.8 miles total (1.3 km return) to the base of the falls, with a very steep, uneven descent and some rock scrambling. Expect wet, slick rock and brief exposure.

What the hike is like

From the Joffre Falls Lookout car park, follow the signed route to the rim, then down a steel stair/ladder section into the gorge. Below, it’s boulder‑hopping and ledges to reach the big pool beneath the falls. Confident swimmers can continue about 10 minutes through narrow pools to a small “island” in a second amphitheatre—bring a floatie if you want a relaxed traverse and a waterproof case if you plan to shoot photos mid‑swim.

Variations and easy options

If you want the views without the scramble, stick to the rim: the short lookouts are easy strolls, and there’s a Class 4 “Joffre View” rim walk (~1.3 km return) that keeps you above the action. Guided rim‑walk tours (about 2 hours, 2.8 km) run seasonally and don’t enter the gorge.

Best time to hike

April–October brings cooler temps and safer conditions. Shoulder months (May/June and September/October) are sweet for walking and photography—the red and ochre walls glow at sunrise and sunset. The waterfall is seasonal and may be just a trickle or dry; it looks best after significant rain. Avoid summer heat and any day with rain in the forecast due to flash‑flood risk. As of December 3, 2025, the park is reported closed due to a bushfire—check official alerts before you go.

Geology and feel

These gorges were carved over immense timescales, with buckled, wavy bands of rock and glossy, water‑worn steps. The amphitheatre’s acoustics and the emerald‑green pool on a bright day make the base feel otherworldly—when water is flowing, it’s magic; when dry, it’s still a striking cathedral of stone.

Logistics

• Length: ~0.8 miles total (1.3 km return). Plan ~2 hours for the Waterfall Trail if you’re careful on the descent and take a swim break.
• Parking: Joffre Falls Lookout car park; if you’re staying at Karijini Eco Retreat, there’s a short bush walk from camp.
• Access: Roads here are largely sealed with only brief gravel sections; 2WD is typically fine in dry weather, but conditions change—confirm locally.
• Fees and rules: Park entry fee required. No pets. Hiking in the gorges after dark isn’t allowed.

Safety, tips, and gear

This is a Class 4–5 environment: steep steps, slick rock, narrow ledges, and minimal markings. Wear grippy footwear, carry plenty of water (at least enough for a two‑hour visit), and pack a fly net in season. Test water before entering—pools are extremely cold and can lead to hypothermia. Never jump or dive. Leave the gorge immediately if rain starts, and always check current closures before heading out.
