Hallo Bay

This is one of the park’s standout places to watch coastal brown bears behaving naturally across open country. Expect bears grazing on nutrient-rich sedge in the meadows, digging clams on the beach, and—especially in early summer—courting and interacting across the flats. Later in the season, salmon runs along the coast boost overall bear activity.

Most visitors come on guided fly-out day trips that land on the coast and then travel on foot in small groups. You’ll move slowly with a guide across meadows, mudflats, and shallow streams, keeping a respectful buffer (at least 50 yards) while positioning for safe, unhurried viewing. Plan for up to roughly 3–4 miles of walking over uneven, often wet ground; many operators provide hip waders.

Give bears space, never block their travel routes, and stay with your guide. Expect bears to respond to each other more than to you, and be ready to reposition calmly as animals move. This is remote country with limited communications; self-reliance and following your guide’s direction are key.

There are no restrooms, shelters, or food services—pack a lunch, water, and layers. Weather can delay or cancel flights. Some operators may redirect to other coastal sites (or even a different park) if conditions or bear activity dictate, so clarify destination and backup plans before you book.
