About Riffles Platform

Riffles Platform is the downstream bear-viewing deck at Brooks River, about 100 yards below Brooks Falls. It overlooks shallow rapids where less-dominant bears—think sows with cubs and curious subadults—often fish away from the hustle at the falls. The vibe is a touch calmer and you’ll see a lot of chase‑and‑pounce strategy in the shallows.

Getting There

It’s roughly 1.2 miles one way from the Brooks Camp Visitor Center via trail and raised boardwalks. You’ll cross the elevated bridge and boardwalk at the river mouth, then follow the signed route toward the Lower River, Riffles, and Falls platforms. Expect mosquitoes, variable surfaces (natural, gravel, wood), and the possibility you’ll pause to yield to bears on the trail. The nearest restroom is back at the start of the Brooks Falls Trail, about 0.6 miles from the platforms. Most visitors arrive in the park by plane and complete a short, mandatory bear-safety orientation before heading out.
