Overview
Engelhard Dam is a concrete weir on the Letaba River between Letaba and Olifants rest camps. Funded by Charles W. Engelhard and built in the 1970s, it helps regulate flow toward Mozambique. That steady water draws animals in the dry months, making the dam area a dependable viewing stop rather than a destination in its own right.

Expect classic river residents—hippos and Nile crocodiles in the pools, plus elephants (common around Letaba), buffalo, impala and steenbok along the banks. Predators sometimes work the river edges in the cool hours. Birders do well here: think fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, storks, plovers and seasonal migrants in the riverine trees. Two proven vantage points are the dam wall lookout itself and the Matambeni bird hide.
This is a viewing stop, not a designated picnic site. Don’t expect toilets, braais or a shop at the dam. Use full facilities at Letaba or Olifants rest camps, or plan your breaks at official SANParks picnic sites in the region (e.g., Makhadzi, Mooiplaas, Masorini). Only get out of your vehicle at signed, designated spots.
Bring binoculars and a longer lens; work the edges slowly and listen for fish eagle calls as a cue to pause. Heat shimmer builds fast by late morning—shoot early or late for cleaner images.
