Overview
Just east of Shingwedzi on the S50, Kanniedood Bird Hide looks over the Shingwedzi River where the old Kanniedood Dam once stood (the dam was demolished in 2019). Even without the dam, it’s a scenic, quiet perch in the far north that still produces rewarding viewing—especially for birders—and the broader river drive remains one of the area’s gems.
If you’re based at Shingwedzi, this hide and the S50 river road are absolutely worth your time: patient, loop‑by‑loop scanning rewards birders, and elephant moments here can be outstanding. Just remember that the waterline is more natural and variable since the dam’s removal—some days will be quieter than others.

This is bird country. Expect waterbirds and summer migrants along the river: Saddle‑billed and Abdim’s Storks, African Openbill, Goliath Heron, African Fish‑Eagle, plus seasonal stars like Woodland Kingfisher, Retz’s Helmetshrike, Broad‑billed Roller, Thick‑billed Cuckoo, and White‑crowned Lapwing. Mammal‑wise, nyala, bushbuck, kudu, and elephant are regulars; lions and leopards are possible along the gallery forest. The Shingwedzi area is well‑known for memorable elephant encounters.
There are no ablutions at day hides here. Use Shingwedzi Rest Camp for restrooms, the cafeteria and shop, the day‑visitor picnic area, and fuel before or after your visit.
