About Shingwedzi Rest Camp

Shingwedzi is the northern Kruger camp people come to for a quieter, more old-school experience. Think riverine trees along the Shingwedzi River fading into mopane shrubland, fewer cars than the south, and a strong chance of big elephant and buffalo herds moving through. It’s calm, authentic, and a great base if you value wilderness over polish.

Tips for visiting Shingwedzi Rest Camp

Book a guided night drive or bush walk as soon as you arrive—spots go fast.
For sightings, target the dry season; in summer, drive at dawn and late afternoon and use the pool midday.
Self‑cater easily from the shop but bring any niche dietary items you rely on.
If day‑tripping, use the riverfront braai/picnic area just inside the camp gate.

Best time to visit

Dry winter months (roughly May–September) are the sweet spot: thinner vegetation and water scarcity concentrate animals along the river and pans, and the light is gorgeous early and late. In summer, it gets hot—use the pool, head out at gate‑opening, and save longer drives for the late afternoon.

Accommodation & Facilities

You’ve got range here: camping, simple huts, a variety of bungalows, a 4‑bed cottage, and the Rentmeester guest house on the river. Units vary from basic to well‑equipped—some have air‑con and kitchen gear, others rely on clean communal kitchens and ablutions. Around camp you’ll find a restaurant and shop, fuel, laundromat, reception/info, basic first aid, and a swimming pool. There’s a designated day‑visitor braai/picnic area overlooking the river just inside the gate. DSTV is only in the guest house. Cell reception exists but can be spotty; don’t expect Wi‑Fi.
