Overview

Set in its own 15,000-hectare private concession in southern Kruger, Lukimbi blends luxury with a true wilderness feel. The lodge sits under ancient trees beside a natural spring on the Lwakahle River, and many moments here happen without leaving the deck—elephants, buffalo, and antelope drift past the waterhole while you sip coffee.

Why it stands out

Because it operates on a private concession, you get a quieter, more exclusive game-viewing experience than along the public roads. The area is Big Five country with especially strong rhino viewing, frequent elephants along the river, and a rewarding mix of habitats—grassland, bushwillow woodland, rocky outcrops, and lush riverine thickets—that keeps sightings varied.

Wildlife expectations

Rhino sightings (both white and black) are a highlight. Leopards use the rocky cover, and cheetah and African wild dog occur in reasonable numbers. If ticking lions is your absolute priority, know that they can be less numerous here than in some southern “sweet grass” zones. Birders score a two-for-one: woodland species and riverine specialists like purple-crested turaco and African fish eagle.

Safari experience

Expect twice-daily game drives with experienced ranger–tracker teams, plus guided bush walks and birding-focused river walks. The setting means your “third game drive” happens from the lodge—keep binoculars handy between activities.

Rooms and facilities

There are 16 luxury suites designed for bush and river views, with deep soaking bathtubs, indoor/outdoor showers, and private decks. Two premier suites (King Cheetah and Giant Eagle Owl) add serious space and private plunge pools. Around the main lodge you’ll find a pool overlooking the river, a gym, spa treatments, a wine cellar for private dinners, and atmospheric bush/boma dining.

Family-friendly and couples-ready

Children from age two are welcome, with kiddies’ menus and family-minded touches. Couples can dial up the romance with private dinners, spa treatments for two, and plenty of quiet corners for sunset watching.

Practicalities

Check-in runs mid-afternoon (1:00–5:00 PM) and check-out is 10:30 AM. There’s free parking, and an airport shuttle can be arranged during set daytime hours for a fee. No pets or service animals are permitted.

Best time to visit

Spring brings comfortably warm weather that suits dawn/evening drives and lingering on the deck after dinner. Thanks to the private concession setup, crowding is rarely an issue, but booking a few nights lets you settle into the rhythm and improves your odds for the trickier predators.
