Mazithi Dam Viewpoint is a simple, spacious roadside stop on the tar H1-3 between Tshokwane and Satara. You’ll find several places to pull over and scan the water without leaving your vehicle. It’s not a picnic site—there’s no getting out, no restrooms, and no services—so treat it as a short wildlife and photo stop, then move on when the action slows.
What You’ll See
Dams and waterholes are natural magnets: antelope, elephants, and predators drift in to drink and hunt. The broader Satara region is famous for big cats, so patient scanning can pay off. After the first rains, bird activity around the dam often pops, while the dry winter into early spring concentrates mammals at remaining water.
How to Work It Into Your Drive
Use Mazithi as a linger-and-listen stop on a Satara–Tshokwane run. Roll slowly, pull over, glass the shorelines, and give it ten minutes before moving on. Pair it with longer breaks where facilities exist—Tshokwane Picnic Site to the south or Satara Rest Camp to the north. If you’re looping east, N’wanetsi Picnic Site is another serviced option.
Best Times to Visit
- Time of day: Be here at gate-open and again in late afternoon when animals move. Midday is quieter but can still deliver thirsty visitors if you’re patient.
- Time of year: Dry season (winter into early spring) is peak for mammal concentrations; early wet season can be excellent for birding.
Practicalities
There are no toilets, water, or picnic facilities here, and shade is limited. Stay in your vehicle unless signs say otherwise. For fuel, food, and restrooms, use Satara or Tshokwane. Drive slowly (you’ll see more) and keep your lens ready—action can kick off suddenly. Note that a few photos floating around mislabel nearby Kumana Dam as Mazithi; follow the roadside signs on the day.
