Overview
Ngotso Dam is no longer an active dam. The structure was removed in 2016 as part of SANParks’ long‑term program to phase out artificial water points that were damaging river systems and disadvantaging rarer grazers. Today it’s essentially a simple roadside viewing stop with a small pull‑off and no facilities.

Sightings here are variable and unpredictable—part of the fun. As with most water‑associated spots in Kruger, keep an eye out for common herbivores and the predators that shadow them. Nothing is guaranteed, so treat it like a short stakeout rather than a destination.
Kruger has been dismantling many man‑made water points to reduce erosion and restore more natural wildlife patterns. Concentrated, artificial water often favored abundant grazers and altered predator–prey dynamics, which wasn’t great for rarer species. The upshot for visitors: fewer “guaranteed” crowds of animals at old dams, but a healthier, more natural system overall.
There are no restrooms, picnic tables, or shops here, and you should remain in your vehicle. Plan bathroom and meal breaks at designated picnic sites or full‑service rest camps such as Olifants or Satara along this corridor.
