Ratelpan Bird Hide

Overview

A classic Kruger bird hide tucked along the S39 (Timbavati River Road), Ratelpan looks out over Piet Grobler Dam. It’s about 4 km north of Timbavati Picnic Site, so it’s easy to weave into a central Kruger drive. The vibe here is unhurried—often quieter than headline hides—making it a rewarding stop if you’re happy to sit still and let the birds come to you.

What You’ll See

This is waterbird country. Expect regular kingfisher action (Pied and Giant), plus herons and egrets hunting the shallows. When the dam’s spillway is flowing in wet years, fishing birds often stack up at the overflow. Comb Duck and, with luck, Thick-billed Cuckoo have been noted here.

Raptors patrol the S39 corridor: look for Martial, Tawny, Wahlberg’s and Lesser Spotted Eagles, with Bateleur common in surrounding woodlands. African Fish-Eagle is a good bet around nearby waterholes. Mammal surprises happen too—elephants occasionally wander through.

Best Time to Visit

• Early morning and late afternoon bring peak bird activity and soft light.
• In the dry season, dwindling water concentrates both birds and game at the dam.
• In the wet season, prioritize the spillway/overflow after good rains for frenetic fishing action.

Make a loop of it on the S39: pair Ratelpan with Timbavati Picnic Site and nearby waterpoints like Goedgegun and Roodewal. This stretch is great for scanning riverine trees, open pans and the road itself for raptors and quelea flocks.

There are no ablutions, water, or shops at the hide. Plan a comfort stop at Timbavati Picnic Site before or after. Bring water, snacks, binoculars and a camera, and keep voices low—quiet hides deliver better sightings and better photos.

Ratelpan sits in a rich transition zone along the Timbavati River. The broader area is shaped by features like the Roodewal dolerite dyke and a mix of mopaneveld and acacia woodland—this habitat variety helps explain the strong raptor and waterbird mix here.
