About Selati Railway Bridge

A piece of living history, the Selati Railway Bridge spans the Sabie River at Skukuza and helped spark the park’s early tourism boom. Today it’s best known as the setting for Kruger Shalati—luxury train carriages parked right on the bridge—so you’re quite literally sleeping above the river while watching elephants, hippos, and kudu drift below.

Built for the Selati Line in the early 1900s (after a temporary wooden bridge washed away in 1901), this crossing became the stop that sold the idea of a national park to the public. The wildly popular “Round in Nine” tourist trains began calling here in 1923, priming the way for the park’s proclamation in 1926. Trains stopped running through Kruger in 1973, but the bridge endured—and in 2020 it was reborn as a one‑of‑a‑kind lodge. Earlier, in 1902, the warden established his HQ at Sabi Bridge, underscoring the site’s administrative importance over the decades.
