Anniversary Narrows

Overview

Tucked in Lovell Wash on the edge of the Muddy Mountains, Anniversary Narrows delivers a true slot-canyon experience—tight corridors, pastel ribbons of rock, and photo-friendly curves that feel more Utah than Vegas. The narrows are short but striking, making this a rewarding target for hikers who like a little adventure without committing to an all-day slog.

Geology & Scenery

The gorge slices through the Lovell Wash Member—orange-to-chalky limestone and sandstone—shot through with streaks of basalt, volcanic tuff, and other intrusions. Uplift has tilted the layers into steep, striated terraces that rise more than a hundred feet above the wash. In places the slot pinches to 4–5 feet, opening to potholes and a bowl-like “atrium” that begs for a wide-angle lens. Expect pastel tones with hints of gold, especially near remnants of old mining activity.

The Hike Experience

From the main parking off Northshore Road, hikers follow the sandy wash to a roughly half‑mile slot section featuring squeezes and easy scrambling. After rains, shallow pools can linger, but it’s usually dry. One detailed trip report logged about 7.3 miles round-trip and ~500 feet of gain from the main trailhead in roughly three hours with photo stops. High-clearance 4x4 drivers can shorten the approach via a rough spur to a closer parking area, but conditions vary and signage is minimal.

Access Notes

One respected guide reports the narrows currently require crossing private land and that the landowner has closed access. This status can change—confirm the latest with Lake Mead National Recreation Area before heading out, and do not cross posted closures or enter private property.

History

This corner of the desert saw borax mining beginning in the early 1920s, and you may notice ruins tied to the old Anniversary Mine. Give any mine openings a wide berth—interesting to see from a distance, not to enter.

Logistics

• Parking: A broad dirt lot serves the standard route; a rough, unsigned spur reaches a closer 4x4 lot.
• Amenities: None—no restrooms or potable water. Bring everything you need.
• Navigation: Roads and junctions are poorly marked; cell coverage is unreliable. Pre‑load maps/GPS.
• Fees: Standard Lake Mead NRA entrance fees apply.

Best Time to Visit

Winter is prime. The route is almost entirely sun‑exposed and can be brutal in summer. Aim for morning when the light is soft in the slot and the day is cooler. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends.

Safety & Etiquette

Flash floods can occur in any slot—avoid during or after storms. Pack more water than you think you’ll need and sun protection for the open wash. Rock collecting for personal use is reported in this area; regulations can be specific, so verify current rules with Lake Mead NRA before picking up anything. Leave mine structures untouched and pack out all waste.
