Overview
A quiet, reflective stop amid the hardwoods, Joppa Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery preserves a slice of the ridge-top communities that predated the park. The site dates to 1862 and served the Elko and Joppa Ridge area for services, weddings, funerals, and social gatherings. It’s open for day-use visits and is one of only a handful of original church buildings still standing in the park.
History
The congregation was first constituted in a log schoolhouse (then known as Pleasant Union). Around the early 1900s, the current wood-frame church replaced that original structure. It’s recognized for its historic significance and remains a gathering place, with an annual Homecoming held on the second Sunday in September. The small cemetery beside and behind the church holds generations from the local community.

Setting and wildlife
The church sits on the karst uplands above the world’s longest cave system. Forested ridges, sinkholes, and springs characterize the landscape. Around the roads and trails here you might spot white‑tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrels, and other common forest wildlife.
Practicalities
Services are minimal to nonexistent here—plan for no restrooms, water, or trash cans. Parking is not clearly marked and may be very limited; arrive in daylight, don’t block gates or roads, and be prepared for uneven ground. Cell coverage can be unreliable, so download maps before you go and navigate with a park map when possible.
Best time to visit
Daylight hours are best for both navigation and photography. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends. If you visit on the second Sunday in September, expect more activity for the Homecoming. Soft morning or late‑afternoon light flatters both the church and the headstones.
